One of the things I have always had a difficult time with is memorizing lyrics. I come across this in people around me as well; finding it hard to memorize chords and chord progressions. And then based on my experience and some enquiry I've done I requite you some tips to overcome this obstacle.
But why do nosotros need to memorize and remember lyrics and chord progressions? What'southward the use of that?
Well, let'south say one of these days you'll have to perform in forepart of an audience somewhere, somehow.
Possibly with a band or on your own…
- or a friend asks you lot to perform a few songs at his nuptials or birthday party…
- or y'all would like to back-trail a singer…
- or you desire to play some prissy songs to entertain a few people on a holiday in the south of France while drinking a common cold beer…
- or just to try out a guitar in the guitar shop in town.
Wouldn't it be squeamish by then, if you could simply play something right on the spot instead of saying "I tin can't practise anything without having my sail music in front end of me".
Another advantage is that yous train your memory to remember music. The more than oft you endeavour to think lyrics and chords the easier it gets and the faster you lot'll larn.
Yous too create liberty in your playing. You're not stuck to a piece of paper and it volition definitely make you lot a better guitar player.
Here are some suggestions:
-Apply your senses
Use as much of the five traditional senses equally possible: sight, hearing, touch on, smell, taste. Your senses are very shut attached to your memory. For example: you probably remember exactly from years ago where yous were and what you lot did when you lot listened to your favorite songs.
-Visualize the vocal
Our brain thinks in pictures. So when nosotros want to memorize lyrics we need to figure out what the song is about and visualize the story in our heads so we can relate to it. Visualize a story that really affects you and then you get emotionally touched past it.
-Feel the song
When y'all sing lyrics, sing them with heart and soul. Try to feel what y'all are singing most instead of summing up but a bunch of words. When you feel the song, you are much more than probable to remember information technology because you are using your senses.
-Connect the sentences
Search for the links and relationships between the sentences. What does i judgement say and what does the next one have to do with information technology.
-Associate the lyrics…
…with your own memories and past experiences. In other words: associate something new with something you already know. The brain likes to work that mode.
-Small chunks
Suspension up a long text into chunks and memorize these one past 1. Repeat the get-go chunk a few times earlier moving on to the next.
-Make information technology cool
Brand the visualization absurd. We tend to think absurd things. Let's take a sentence from the song "Hotel California" from the Eagles. For instance: "Her heed is tiffany-twisted, she got the Mercedes Benz". If you visualize an enormous brain (like really really big) twisting pop vocalist Tiffany (from the pop song: "I Think We're Alone Now" in the late 80's) while driving a Mercedes Benz, you probably won't forget it. Mayhap y'all retrieve it's a bad example… I suggest you create your ain absurdness. The point is: if you read a sentence y'all can't relate to at all, arrive ridiculous.
-Keywords
Memorize key words that trigger other words. I e'er attempt to memorize the first give-and-take or two words in a verse or chorus. If I remember these, the rest will follow past itself. Or effort to remember the most important word in the judgement to trigger the other words.
-Be alert
Make sure you are alert. Memorize the lyrics when you had plenty slumber instead of when you are tired. Possibly information technology's a good thought to practice this in the morning opposed to learning it later on a busy day at work.
-Be interested
Exist interested in the story of the author. What is the story near? Tin yous relate to it? Are there words in the lyrics you don't understand? Wait them upward in a dictonary. Feel the story. Alive it while you sing it.
-Repeat
1 of the all-time ways to memorize lyrics is repeating them. Repeat the lyrics frequently during the mean solar day for at least a week or so if y'all want information technology to access your long-term retentivity.
-No distractions
Brand certain you are non distracted. Lose all internal and external distractions:
- External distractions: plough of your Television receiver, radio, net, etc, etc. Go to a room where it'southward tranquillity and people tin can't interrupt or distract you.
- Internal distractions: are you worrying about things like your job, relations or just little things? Try to put them out of your mind or work them out.
-Employ your waiting fourth dimension
Memorize while y'all are waiting: while you lot're in traffic, driving your automobile, waiting in a doctor's office, while yous are cooking, etcetera. Yous can apply this precious time to work on your repertoire.
-Chords
When I started out playing guitar, I liked to run across chords as shapes and objects. It's a fast way of memorizing. Think of a D-chord as a triangle. Recall of an A-chord as a picayune staircase going downward, think of a Bm-chord as a staircase going up etc, etc. Sometimes I notwithstanding do this with difficult chords. Because I'grand used to think that way, I as well retrieve difficult shapes more easily.
-Chords progressions
The same with chord-progressions. If it's possible, try to see them every bit shapes and objects. For example when I play a chord progression like Am (577333), C major (x35553), Chiliad major (355433) and D major(x57775), I picture it like crossing the street diagonal from Am to C. And so I go up to G and so I cross the street over again to D major. Try to meet the logic behind the chord progression.
-One at a time
Again with chord progressions: intermission them upward into chunks. Beginning learn the poesy. Break information technology down into phrases. A lot of times you play the same chord progression over 1 or more than of the phrases. Maybe even the whole poetry. Practice the verse a few times so you feel comfortable with information technology. Now go to the pre-chorus or chorus and over again break it into chunks. One chord progression at a time and attempt to see the logic backside the chords and chord progressions.
At present become memorize your favorite guitar songs and astonish people!
Don't forget to write a comment. :-) I'd appreciate information technology.
